This Month, the Lower Shore Workforce Alliance had the pleasure of participating in the Wor-Wic Community College candidate selection process for their Construction Academy program. This fully funded Maryland Works for Wind grant program provides training for 13 weeks (260 hours), Monday-Friday from 8:00am-12:00pm for selected candidates at the newly renovated hybrid shop and classroom located within the American Job Center.

The free program offers students the opportunity to become proficient in construction safety, hand, and power tools, reading and interpreting floor plans and elevation drawings, using common measuring and leveling tools, determining layouts for floor assemblies, wood frames, doors, windows, ceiling joists, and roof rafters, and identifying and determining quantities of materials required. Students are required to maintain at least seventy percent on each written and performance-based assessment and may earn up to five certifications: First Aid/AED, OSHA10, Rigging, Fall Safe, and Confined Space.

Field trips, guest speakers, and project-based learning engage students with information and real-life experience in preparation for the construction industry. At the end of each cohort, a graduation ceremony is held to honor graduates and award certifications and diplomas. Families, friends, and local hiring businesses are invited to attend. Since this is a Maryland grant, applicants are required to live and/or work in Maryland.

For more information about the Construction Academy or other Wor-Wic grant programs that are free for selected applicants, please email Dr. Rhonda Banks at rbanks@worwic.edu and include your phone #.

For application questions, please contact Quality Staffing Services in Salisbury, MD at 410-742-2600.
